It would be impossible to describe all the different bars in the Golden Gai area, simply because there are hundreds! This series of small laneways sits to the east of Shinjuku and is home to bars of all shapes, sizes and themes. Most establishments seat around ten people, so the atmosphere is cozy and patrons can converse with bartenders. There is something for everyone from quiet and low-key through to rowdy and boisterous. It’s often hard to choose, so look for somewhere with your ideal atmosphere and some other patrons, they’ll be your new friends! Note: some bars require a cover charge.
